Medford Fire Department Awarded $105K Grant From Cummings Foundation

MEDFORD, MA — The fire department has been selected as one of 150 organizations to receive funding through the Cummings Foundation's annual grant program, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced Monday.

The department will receive $105,000 throughout three years after being chosen through a competitive review process that drew a record 959 applicants. The funding will be distributed in annual installments of $35,000 and will be used to expand the department's community engagement efforts and strengthen relationships with residents.

"As we work to develop our community engagement programs, the Medford Fire Department is honored to receive the support of the Cummings Foundation," Fire Chief Todd Evans said. "Thank you to everyone who supported and worked on our grant application."

The Medford Fire Department was among 150 organizations selected for funding through the foundation's annual grant program, which awarded $35 million this year. Recipients were chosen from a record applicant pool and represent a wide range of causes, including education, healthcare, housing, workforce development, youth programming and community services.

Founded in 1986 by philanthropists Bill and Joyce Cummings, the Woburn-based Cummings Foundation has grown into one of the largest private foundations in New England. Since its founding, the organization has awarded more than $650 million to nonprofits across Greater Boston.

The annual grant program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex and Suffolk counties, as well as Brookline, Dedham, Milton, Needham, Quincy and Wellesley. Through the initiative, the foundation reinvests in communities where it owns commercial real estate. Its affiliated company, Cummings Properties, manages millions of square feet of commercial space, with rental profits helping fund the foundation's charitable giving.
