MBTA Seeking Public Input On Proposed Medford Bus Route Changes

MEDFORD, MA — Residents will have the opportunity to weigh in on proposed changes to several MBTA bus routes during an open house at City Hall later this week as the agency considers updates to its Better Bus Network redesign.

The MBTA is seeking feedback on proposed changes affecting Routes 67, 80, 94, 96 and 350, which serve Medford, Somerville, Arlington, and Cambridge. The proposals are part of a broader effort to expand bus service, improve reliability and make transit more accessible, with a particular focus on service along the Boston Avenue corridor.

The agency is evaluating three possible options for improving service in the area.

"Option A" would extend Route 80 to Arlington Heights while maintaining the current Routes 67 and 350.

"Option B" would retain Route 94, preserving direct service along Boston Avenue and maintaining a one-seat ride for Medford residents traveling through the corridor.

"Option C" would reroute Route 96 from George Street to Boston Avenue, increasing service frequency with buses arriving every 15 minutes or better.

According to the MBTA, the three options are intended to improve transit access along Boston Avenue, though the agency noted the proposals are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Officials could ultimately combine elements from multiple options after reviewing public feedback before making a final decision.

Residents can learn more about the proposals and speak directly with project staff during an open house scheduled for Thursday, July 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Howard Alden Memorial Chambers on the second floor of Medford City Hall on 85 George Hassett Drive.

The open house follows a virtual public meeting held earlier this month and is part of a larger public engagement process for the MBTA's proposed Bus Network Redesign updates. The transit agency said the in-person format will allow for more in-depth conversations about the Medford-specific proposals.

The MBTA said public feedback will help shape the final Better Bus Network plan. If approved, the service changes would be implemented alongside other Better Bus Network improvements as operators, facilities and infrastructure become available.

Residents who cannot attend the open house can still submit comments through the MBTA's online survey, which remains open through Wednesday, Aug. 5.
