Medford Working To Supply Students With Supplies And Haircuts For The Upcoming School Year

MEDFORD, MA — The city is once again collecting school supplies and recruiting volunteers as the city prepares to help local students get ready for the upcoming school year.

The city's annual Back-to-School Supply Drive is underway and will continue through Monday, Aug. 17. Residents are encouraged to donate new, unused school supplies by dropping them off at the Mayor's Office in Room 202 at City Hall or the Office of Prevention and Outreach in Room 205. Donations can also be made by purchasing items through the city's online Amazon wish list. The supply drive is also being promoted by Medford Public Schools as part of a communitywide effort to support local students.

The donated supplies will be distributed during Medford's second annual Back-to-School Resource Day, which is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the City Hall Chambers. The event will offer free backpacks filled with school supplies, complimentary haircuts and connections to local organizations and resources.

This year, families requesting a backpack with school supplies will be required to complete a registration form before the event. Students interested in receiving a free haircut will also be scheduled for appointments in advance, with each volunteer barber or hairstylist serving a limited number of students.

The city is seeking volunteer barbers and hairstylists to provide free haircuts during the event. Officials said volunteers are welcome to participate for the full two-hour event or provide as many haircuts as their schedules allow. Community organizations and vendors are also invited to participate in the annual event.

Last year's inaugural Back-to-School Resource Day featured free backpacks and school supplies, complimentary haircuts, free vaccines and information from community organizations. City officials credited residents, businesses and community partners with helping make the event possible.

The city's back-to-school supply drive has become an annual effort to help Medford students begin the school year with the supplies they need. Last year's collection ran through mid-August before supplies were distributed to local students during the community resource event.

Residents can donate school supplies through Aug. 17 by dropping off new, unused items at City Hall or by purchasing items through the city's Amazon wish list. Barbers, hairstylists, vendors and community organizations interested in participating in the Aug. 24 event can register online now.
