MEDFORD, MA — A man was arrested after allegedly chasing a woman and throwing a glass bottle that struck a nearby child at a shopping plaza Wednesday evening, the Medford Police Department announced.
Washington, D.C. resident Jose Angel Lozano, 49, was arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon. Officers responded to the Fells Plaza at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, after receiving reports of a man chasing several people in the area of BioLife Plasma Services on 640 Fellsway. Multiple calls followed, including reports that a firearm had been shown and that a shooting may have occurred.
Officers quickly detained a man matching the description provided by callers. According to police, a woman who had allegedly been chased told investigators that she had a brief interaction with the man before he began chasing her and threw a glass bottle in her direction. A piece of glass from the bottle struck a child who was nearby, causing a minor injury.
Investigators reviewed video footage and spoke with witnesses following the incident. Police ultimately determined that no firearm was involved and no shooting had taken place.
Lozano was transported to Somerville District Court on Thursday morning for arraignment. Police credited responding officers with quickly locating and safely detaining Lozano while investigating the initial reports of a potentially armed individual and possible shooting.
