MELROSE, MA — Alderman Monica Medeiros is the third person to announce their candidacy to run for mayor. Medeiros, who made the announced Wednesday on Facebook, is in her third term as an at-large alderman after three terms as a ward alderman.

"Good news to share this morning – I am running for Mayor of Melrose!" Medeiros said.

Medeiros is the second woman to announce she is running for mayor, following Alderman Manisha Bewtra. No woman has ever been elected mayor in Melrose.

Mederios is also the only Republican to have announced her candidacy.

"I think it's really important to remind people here that there are Republicans and conservatives and are an actual active group here," she said last summer at a Melrose rally in support for Geoff Diehl's run for U.S. Senate.

Medeiros, who has also been a School Committee member, is in her third term as president of the Massachusetts Municipal Councillors’ Association and is on the Mass Municipal Association’s Executive Committee.

"I love this city," Medeiros said Wednesday. "I have lived here all my life, and I have been honored to serve it for more than a decade."

Medeiros will have a kickoff event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at the Lt. Norman Prince VFW Post #1506.

Medeiros joins Bewtra and Rep. Paul Brodeur as those who have announced intentions to run. More candidates are expected to announce in the coming weeks.

Mayor Gail Infurna has said she will not run in the fall.

A preliminary election is set for Tuesday, Sept. 17.
