Cool Day at the Pool
I know is when I was sitting on the verandah, I thought how tranquil it
was. There was no one in the pool. The lifeguard was reading, huddled
in his jacket to keep warm. The couch was soft and comfortable and I
felt drowsy. I was tempted to remove my sandals and put my feet up. I
could hear the birds chirping and the leaves on the trees rustling. The
scalloped corners of the blue, striped awning shading the verandah were
flapping. The wind was making tiny ripples on the surface of the pool.
But while I contemplated having a quick nap , the roar of a suburban
train rushing north-passing east of our apartment complex-broke my
reverie . The ground shook.I
checked the clock on the wall. I had been sitting there for half an
hour. I stood up and stretched, descended the stairs from the verandah,
and stopped at the pool to say a few words to the lifeguard,
“No one here today?”
“No, it’s been quiet.”
“The temperature must be in the low sixties.”
“Yeah, but I can’t complain.”
“No.”
“Well, have a nice rest of your day.”
“You, too.”
