Congratulations to Andrew Heath and Jake Curran for successfully completing the Global Education in Melrose (GEM) program! Andrew and Jake were awarded medals and certificates at the senior awards ceremony at Melrose High School on Monday, May 16, 2011.
The GEM program is the culmination of their foreign language studies, but is also an inter-disciplinary program that asks students to cultivate global awareness and develop the skills to become global citizens.

Andrew’s GEM project focused on France, as he recently traveled there with the high school, and has been studying French seriously since he was in the middle school. Andrew recently took the AP French exam, and will be minoring in French next year at Carnegie Mellon.
Jake’s project focused on Spain, where he traveled this year through the high school’s first Spanish exchange program. Jake is a serious and gifted language student. He recently took the Spanish AP exam and also is in French 3 Honors.
Both students are officers of the French club, and have made significant contributions to the language program at the high school. We are very proud of both these young students and their commitment to languages and global education!
