Melrose Cancels FY27 Budget Hearing
A rescheduled date has not yet been announced.
MELROSE, MA — The Appropriations and Oversight Committee canceled its budget hearing scheduled for Thursday night, according to the City of Melrose’s official calendar.
The hearing was set to take place at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at City Hall, 562 Main St. The calendar entry now lists the meeting as canceled and says it will be “rescheduled to future dates.”
The city did not provide a reason for the cancellation or list a new date for the hearing as of Thursday evening.

The cancellation comes as the City Council continues reviewing the full Fiscal Year 2027 city budget, following the School Committee’s unanimous approval of its portion of the budget during its most recent meeting.
The school district’s FY27 operating budget totals $53,937,000. Superintendent of Schools Cari Berman and Deputy Superintendent Dan Kelley previously presented the spending plan, which includes funding tied to the city’s recent $13.5 million tax override.

According to the city, $3.8 million of the override funds are designated for public schools. The override will directly fund 17 school positions and restore the team-based education model at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School this coming fall.
This year’s school budget is nearly $6 million higher than the FY26 budget, when many positions had to be eliminated due to funding constraints.
According to the city’s 2026 City Council calendar, the budget hearing process begins in mid-May with a joint meeting between the City Council and School Committee. Budget hearings are then held by the Appropriations & Oversight Committee on Mondays and Thursdays for roughly five weeks.
The calendar also says the full budget must be voted on within 45 days after the mayor submits it to the council.
For residents, the hearing process is one of the main public steps before the city adopts its annual spending plan. Councilors use the meetings to review department budgets, question spending requests and discuss funding for city services before taking a final vote.
No official quote was included in the cancellation notice. Residents can check the city’s calendar and meeting agenda portal for updated hearing dates.
