Lifelong Malden Resident Retires After 46-year Municipal Career
Kathy Hannan worked for multiple city departments throughout the years.
MALDEN, MA — A significant leader of the city’s police department retired after a notably long and diverse tenure.
Traffic Department Supervisor/Coordinator Kathy Hannan called it a career after nearly 50 years of service to the city. A lifelong Malden resident, Hannan’s hometown career began with the Retirement Board in 1980 before transitioning as an administrator in the fire department. Her initial duties as Traffic Supervisor/Coordinator involved supervising all Parking Enforcement Officers and Crossing Guards throughout the city.
“My job evolved into a much more challenging position than when I started,” Hannan told Patch. “I can say, with all honesty, that I stayed in my position for this long because I really loved my job. I am also happy that I am leaving here still loving it. It made it so easy coming in every day.”

Hannan’s other duties included serving as Clerk to the Traffic Commission and filling and scheduling police details. She expressed her satisfaction with the decision to make a civil service career in her hometown in addition to being a lifelong resident.
“I met so many great people who are willing to perform such an important service to the City of Malden,” Hannan told Patch. “I will definitely miss all the people I have worked with. I will also miss helping the citizens of Malden any time I could.”

Last week, Hannan was recognized by Mayor Gary Christenson and Police Chief Glenn Cronin with a citation commending her for her years of service.
“By all accounts, Kathy (Hannan) did a great job demonstrating outstanding administrative skills, professionalism and dedication to the Malden community,” Christenson said.
Hannan said the recognition meant a lot to her and was a nice culmination to her vocation that was her priority for 46 years.
“I am born and raised in Malden and still own a home and live here. I am Malden
true and true,” Hannan told Patch. “I take great pride in all I have done during my time working for the city and I hope I made a difference.”
