LISTEN: Phone Scam Targets Eastern Bank Customers
The automated phone message tells customers their MasterCard has been locked and then attempts to get people to provide personal information over the phone.
A phone scam going around Melrose and surrounding communities this week is targeting Eastern Bank customers in trying to obtain personal information from those customers.
The message purports to be an official notification from Eastern Bank and tells the potential scam victim that their MasterCard has been locked for security reasons.

Chief Mike Lyle sent out a message today via the city's Code Red reverse 911 system alerting Melrosians to the scam.
Lyle told Melrose Patch, "From what we are getting, the automation is requesting personal information, with a series of prompts. The police department has not had a reported case of identity theft since this started."

This is an important message from Chief Michael Lyle. The City of Melrose along with neighboring communities has been targeted in a phone scam regarding Eastern Bank. I advise you to hang up promptly if you receive on of these calls. Remember, never provide anyone personal information over the telephone. If you need additional information please feel free to contact the Melrose Police Department at 781-979-4456.
