Literacy On Our Pathways, Roadways and Rail Trails

... A reading challenge...by Debbi Collar

Electronic devices appear to be more common today than the printed pages of yesteryear.

The printed page, many still say they is their preference. rather than sliding a finger along the smooth glass of electronic equipment.

Although the concept of "reading" on iPhones, iPads or computers remains the same, the feel of leafing through pages is almost gone . Is the printed page slowly being replaced by the technology of computer chips rather than hard cover or soft cover books?

Apparently one resident of the City of Melrose has joined in with others who leave a miniature library of pre-read books along roads, rail trails or in various neighborhoods. These reading houses are set up to encourage literacy and share pages from previously purchased books with others.

This Upham Street resident put up a miniature library near the edge of his/her property on Upham Street. Continuing a tour around the city of Melrose, it was the only one of its kind throughout many Melrose roads.

Those who place the miniature libraries, kindly ask that if you do take a book from one of these educational areas that you also leave one for others to read - the old fashioned way, sans the use of modern technology.

A literacy challenge?

Maybe.

Kudos to the Upham Street resident who may be at the beginning of a new literacy challenge for children and adults alike.

Will other neighbors take part in turning the pages of many a book and leave more books in their own created miniature display along their property?

Which do you prefer - reading on an electronic device or leafing through inked and typeset parchment paper?
