Lusas, St. Fleur Lead Melrose Track in Div. 3 Championships

The Melrose High boys and girls track teams had impressive showings at the MIAA Div. 3 Eastern Mass. Championships.

The boys track team took 12th place while the girls finished 19th out of more than 30 teams at the MIAA Div. 3 Eastern Mass. Championships at Oliver Ames High School on Friday. 

Cody Lusas led the boys squad, finishing second place in the shot put with a throw of 49-3 and taking ninth in the discus with a 124-07. Kevin Persons also had a big day for Melrose and took third place in the 200 with a time of 22.49 and a fifth place finish in the 100 with a 11.68. 

Bill Killilea took eighth in the preliminary round of the 110 hurdles with a 15.72 and then took eighth in the finals with a 17.77. The Red Raiders’ 4x100 team of Dean Anderson, Spencer Walsh, Aaron Jones and Shane McKinely finished 15th in 46.67.

On the girls side, Bionca St. Fleur finished fourth in the preliminary round of the 200 with a 26.18 ahead of teammate Kaitlin Gilbert who finished 28th with a 27.87. In the finals, St. Fleur finished eighth with a 26.81 and went on to take ninth in the long jump with a 16-01. 

Olivia Downey finished eighth in the 400 with a 60.75, Laura Gillis finished 19th in the 800 with a 2:32.66 while teammate Sarah McDonald finished 24th in 2:35.77. Downey also took ninth in the high jump with a 4-10

In the mile Anna Whelan finished 15th 15th with a 5:52.88 and Alban Foulser finished 17th with a 5:55.61 while Laura Whalen took 29th in the 100 (13.61). 

Lilah Drafts-Johnson finished 14th in the two-mile with a 12:47/82, and in the 100 hurdles preliminary round, Ashley Bellfield finished eighth in 16.90 while Annalisa DeBari finished 13th with a 17.18 and Amanda Fountain finished 27th in 17.85. In the finals Bellfield took sixth overall in 16.60. DeBri also finished 11th in the triple jump with a 32-11 and Alex O’Brien took 14th with a jump of 31-11.5. 

Melrose’s 4x100 relay team of Gilbert, St. Fleur, Whalen and DeBari ran an impressive 51.150 to take fourth place while the 4x800 team of Foulser, McDonald, Gillis and Hannah Singleman finished 10th with a 10:55.59. 

With their top finishes, the girls 4x100 relay team along with Lusas and Persons will compete this Saturday at the Mass. All-State meet at Bridgewater State College.
