Melrose Bike Commuter Convoys Ride Again

On five Fridays this summer, residents from Melrose and the surrounding area make a guided bicycle commute into the city of Boston.

After this year’s relentless winter, several Melrose residents wanted to spend some time enjoying the spring sunshine, but their jobs and commutes left them with little time to get outside. The solution? Combine outdoor time with commute time.

On April 24th, they gathered together on Main Street in the morning and rode their bikes to work in Boston, stopping at City Hall Plaza to pick up a free breakfast for bike commuters.

Some of them were braving the streets for the first time, while others were repeating what they do every day year round.

In 2015, for the third year in a row, the Melrose Ped/Bike Committee is coordinating Friday morning bike commuter convoys from Melrose, through Malden and Everett to Boston. These are also part of the Boston Bikes “Bike Friday” events, and at the end of each ride, there is a mini-festival with free breakfast and other give-aways. The rides move at a slow pace with a group that sticks together and are a great opportunity for people who are interested in riding into the city but have been hesitant to try it. The events also attract experienced riders who get the rare treat of moving through traffic with a protective convoy.
