Melrose City Councilor Making A Run At State Rep.

The councilor has six years of experience presiding over Melrose.

MELROSE, MA — A City Councilor has launched a campaign for State Rep.

Leila Migliorelli announced this week she is running to represent the 32nd Middlesex District in the House of Representatives. Her candidacy comes on the heels of incumbent and fellow Melrose resident Kate Lipper Garabedian announcing a bid for State Senate.

Migliorelli has served on the city council since 2020. In 2024, she became the first woman of color to serve as the council's president after being voted to the role unanimously by her peers. She graduated from Providence College with a Bachelor’s degree Political Science before earning a Master’s in Public Policy at Tufts University. She now works at Tufts as the school’s Senior Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations.

“The 32nd Middlesex District deserves a leader who has a proven track record of getting results in their community, and I will be that voice for you on Beacon Hill. Residents can count on me to do my homework, to seek and share input, and advocate for our communities’ needs,” Migliorelli said. “Those who know me that I will work hard on the campaign trail and, if I have the privilege of earning your votes and representing you.”

She added that she plans to meet with constituents in the coming weeks and months in order to better understand the needs of and connect with constituents.

Her resume in Melrose local government includes being the Chair of the Finance Committee, Chair of the Legal and Legislative Committee, Chair of the Appropriations and Oversight Committee, and Vice Chair of the Health, Education and Welfare Committee. During her tenure on the City Council, she is credited with being a driving force behind the creation of the city’s affordable housing trust and investments in the school district. She lives in Melrose with her husband and their two sons.

The 32nd Middlesex District includes the entirety of Melrose, Ward 5 Precincts 2 and 3A of Malden, and Precincts 4,5, and 6 of the Town of Wakefield.
