Melrose Earns $225K Grant for Energy-Saving Project

Melrose was one of 51 Massachusetts communities that received a grant to fund clean energy projects as part of the state’s Green Communities program.

The $225,000 grant will pay for a retrofit of city-owned metered and non-metered streetlights, park lights and parking lot lights with LED technology.

Almost $8.9 million in grants were handed out by the Department of Energy Resources and given to existing Green Communities that have successfully invested their initial designation grants and previous competitive grant awards. Communities could only receive a maximum of $250,000.

“The Green Communities grants will allow municipalities to save a considerable amount in long-term energy costs, as well as to protect the environment and make progress toward the Commonwealth’s clean energy goals,” Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito stated in a press release.

The state projects that these funded programs will result in an annual savings of $2.1 million, energy savings equal to the annual consumption of almost 550 homes in the state.
