The Melrose Electricity Program is Up and Running

The Melrose Community Electricity Aggregation (CEA) Program is up and running! Residents and businesses enrolled in the Melrose CEA Program should see NextEra Energy Services under the Supply Services section on July National Grid electric bills. The standard rate option is called Melrose Local Green which is fixed at 10.5 cents/kWh until the contract ends in November 2021.

The Melrose CEA Program rate is slightly less than the current utility Basic Service rate of 10.7 cents/kWh and is likely going to be much less than next winter’s Basic Service rate which goes into effect on November 1st every year. Savings cannot be guaranteed throughout the contract term as National Grid’s rates change twice a year and future Basic Service rates are unknown.

Account holders can opt up to the Melrose Premium Local Green option at 12.8 cents/kWh which includes 100% local renewable energy. Melrose Basic does not include the additional 5% renewable energy included in Melrose Local Green and is available at a rate of 10.4 cents/kWh.

Residents and businesses can opt in, out, up or down at any time during the contract term by calling the supplier NextEra Energy Services at 855-639-8058. A small number of accounts that intended to enroll in the Melrose CEA Program were prevented from doing so due to having a block on the National Grid account or because the account name and numbers don’t match up. NextEra is sending letters to the rejected account holders asking them to call the number above to confirm certain information. If you think you should be in the program and don’t see it on your most recent electric bill, call NextEra.

As of July about 9,400 accounts were enrolled in the program which indicates that about 10% of eligible accounts opted out. Only 35 accounts have chosen the 100% renewable option called Melrose Premium Local Green but the city expects that number to increase over time as more residents learn about it through outreach efforts by the Melrose Energy Commission.
