From Melrose High social studies teacher Lisa Lord:
On Thursday, September 15, Melrose High School junior Carlitos Vivas and senior Sean Darling attended the 4th Annual James Otis Lecture at the Massachusetts State House in Boston.
The James Otis Lecture is presented by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, an organization founded in 1958 to preserve the Constitutional right to trial by jury, promote the efficient and ethical practice of law, and educate young citizens on the meaning and value of the rule of law. This year’s program focused on the life and career of John Adams, and featured remarks by Christopher Duggan, Director of the James Otis Lecture Series; Harry T. Widmann, President of the ABOTA; John Ferling, noted Adams scholar and Professor Emeritus at University of West Georgia; and the Honorable Margaret H. Marshall, Chief Justice (Ret.) of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. After the program, students had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with the panelists.
Carlitos and Sean were nominated as Otis Scholars by the Social Studies Department for their interest, effort and achievement in American History. Junior Alexandra Foley and seniors Celina Aherrera, Kathleen Cosman, and Margaret Moriarty were also recognized as Otis Scholars, but were unable to attend the lecture due to prior commitments.
