Melrose OUI Pursuit Damages Cruiser: Police

A Wakefield man was arrested after allegedly leading police on a chase while drunk. He faces a litany of charges.

MELROSE, MA — An alleged drunk driver faces a number of charges after an overnight chase downtown that police said saw him drive into a cruiser.

Jamie Kerrigan, 50, of Wakefield was arrested in the early-morning hours on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Police said he fled a traffic stop after briefly coming to a stop, leading police on a chase in which he drove through red lights and operating on the wrong side of the road, according to details from the Melrose Free Press.

Kerrigan's vehicle allegedly struck the rear of a police cruiser.

When Kerrigan's car stopped on Winter Street, he fled on foot, according to police. He was found nearby.

Kerrigan was charged with OUI liquor (second offense,) failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of property damage, motor vehicle lights violations, failure to stop/yield, marked lanes violation, and speeding.

12:53 p.m. - Report of man intoxicated walking into Shaw's.

1:54 p.m. - A 38-year-old Natick man was issued a summons for allegedly violating an abuse prevention order on Washington St.

Wednesday, July 8

12:28 a.m. - Police issued a summons to a 23-year-old Malden man for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

1:30 a.m. - Caller reported he was chased by a coyote while walking his dog on Washington St. Police caught up with the man and gave him and his dog a ride back to his home.

6:03 a.m. - Callers reported multiple sighting of a coyote near Laurel and Grove Street.

9:16 a.m. - Complaint of vehicle driving wrong-way down one-way Essex Street.

Friday, Aug. 10

12:39 a.m. - Malden Police reported robbery on Forrest Street, looking in the area for two men possibly armed with a knife. Melrose Police checked Forest St. and Wyoming Cemetery. No one found.
