Several Melrose High School students gained valuable experience this summer working at City Hall as part of Mayor’s Dolan’s intern program. The students worked in many different city departments under the direction of the mayor’s office staff.
As part of the program, the 28 interns spent eight hours each week, taking part in a variety of community service activities.

Students helped to clean veterans’ memorials, helped staff members file and mail documents, and helped with preparations for the upcoming fiscal year, among many other tasks.
“This program serves two purposes,” said Mayor Robert J. Dolan. “The interns are a big help as we wind up one fiscal year and move into another. We have a lot of organizing this time of year, as we put files into storage and close the books on Fiscal 2015, and a lot of preparation for the year ahead. The interns are instrumental in this, and we try very hard to find work for them that matches their interests.

“The other side of it is that the interns gain workplace skills that hopefully will put them ahead of other candidates when they go job-hunting. They learn the importance of arriving on time, communicating with their supervisor, and appropriate behavior and dress for a work environment. For many of our interns, this is their first work experience, and we hope it will get them off to a good start.”
The internship program in now in its 14th year. It runs through August 20.
