Melrose Symphony Orchestra Turns 100: Celebration!

Fireworks, concert, and more this weekend to celebrate!

MELROSE, MA — We don't want to hear anyone complain about not having anything to do this weekend. While the much-anticipated Victorian Fair takes place Sunday, the Melrose Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 100th birthday Saturday.

The City and MSO have provided a plethora of information for anyone interested in attending. Here are some of the need-to-know details:

The celebration is Saturday, Sept. 9, at Morelli Baseball Field. The gates open at 5:30 p.m., the concert is at 7 p.m., and fireworks over Ell Pond are at 9 p.m. All ages are welcome. Patch will be there! Subscribe for local news and alerts, and say 'Hello!'

There will be road closures. The City posted this cool interactive map of road closures, parking lots, and gate entrances. Tremont St. from Lynn Fells Parkway to Melrose Street will be close to thru traffic from 4:30-9:30 p.m. The same is true of Tremont from Lynn Fells Parkway to West Emerson and the Lynn Fells Parkway from Vinton Street to Melrose Street. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

So where will more parking be? Three parking lots off Melrose Street will be open at the high school, and lots will be open at the Memorial Knoll, Trinity Church, Roosevelt School, Melrose Library, and Robinson Funeral Home. Handicap parking and drop-off is available on Tremont Street by the third-base entrance. The accessible seating area is behind the VIP area near third base.

You are welcome to bring blankets, chairs (which are NOT provided, food, beverages, etc.) Do not bring canopies, tents, flames, pets (unless it is a service animal,) or bikes.

You can sit in the outfield of Morelli or the football field and bleachers. Remember, though, that food/drink is not allowed on the football field. The VIP area near the infield is invite only.

There will be plenty of food available via vendors and trucks. La Qchara, Regina Pizzeria, Big Daddy Hot Dogs, and the Cookie Monster Truck will be open from 5:30 - 9 p.m.

Here are some additional things to know, taken from the mayor's blog:

When is the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo?"

Kids and adults are welcome to try the instruments of the orchestra from 5:30-6:45 pm. The "Petting Zoo" will be located by the food trucks and vendor area.

Will you have MSO merchandise for sale?
Yes! Visit MSO Information & Shop tables located by the food vendors. We have long and short sleeve shirts, 16 oz tumblers, and canvas tote bags available for purchase (cash, check, or credit).

What is the concert etiquette?
While this is a casual and fun concert, we ask that you respect the musicians and conductor and refrain from any noise during the performance. Parents should keep children seated with them and not allow them to run around during the concert. You’re welcome to take photos and videos (share them with us using the hashtag #mso100) – but please no flash photography.

What is the rain policy?
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to Memorial Hall at 7 pm. There is no rain-date. Please check www.mso100.org for any cancellation or weather updates.
