Melrose Voting Results: Sam Hammar-d Jason Lewis In Hometown

Also, nearly 38 percent of voting Republicans in Melrose checked the box for Scott Lively, the founder of what the SLPC says is a hate group

MELROSE, MA — Twenty-nine percent of Melrose voters made their voices heard at the polls during Tuesday's State Primary elections. Unofficial election results had 5,759 voters cast a ballot in the city.

Melrose showed up strong for one of its own. Sam Hammar, who lost the Fifth Middlesex District Senate primary to incumbent Jason Lewis, secured 57 percent of the vote in her hometown. Hammar got 2,461 votes to Lewis's 1,642 in the Democratic primary.

Middlesex DA had Marian Ryan secured nearly 47 percent to best Donna Patalano.

Secretary of State William Galvin got 2,658 votes to Josh Zakim's 1,388.

Jay Gonzalez coasted past Bob Massie, 2,067-1,348, for the right to face Gov. Charlie Baker in November's general election.

Speaking of Baker, his opponent Scott Lively got 544 votes Tuesday. That's 37.88 percent of the voting Republicans in Melrose. Lively is the founder of what has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and co-authored a book claiming gay men were behind the Holocaust.

Geoff Diehl, who stopped by Melrose to greet a smattering of supporters a couple weeks ago, secured 52 percent of the vote in a three-way race for the Republican nod in the U.S. Senator race.
