Melrose's $168K Grant Is A Cherry On Top
The city will put the money to use on a street that connects senior housing residents to downtown.

MELROSE, MA — The City of Melrose will likely put a $168,000 grant to use in improving Cherry Street.
The Cherry Street project was high up on the priority list among the Complete Streets initiative, and it wouldn't take much more planning to get started. That's just what the state was looking for.
"We were really trying to develop a project that would rise to the top, meet their criteria, and get funded," City Planner Denise Gaffey told the Appropriations Committee Monday night.

The work will include safety and accessibility improvements and new beautification on Cherry Street, which connects a lot of residents from senior housing to downtown.
Gaffey said the work will hopefully begin in the fall, and that the grant will cover 100 percent of the costs.

"We've had a lot of citizen involvement," Ward 6 Alderman Peter Mortimer said Monday night.
The state awarded nearly $5 million to 31 communities under the Housing Choice Initiative.
The Appropriations Committee, which is made up of the Board of Aldermen, unanimously pushed order to the full Board for approval.
