A car struck a tree and landed on its side at Bellevue Avenue and Porter Street shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon, requiring Melrose firefighters to cut open the roof of the car to extricate the driver.

Melrose Police Lt. Mark Decroteau said that a witness reported that the woman was driving north on Bellevue and approaching the intersection of Porter Street when the vehicle swerved sharply to the left and struck a city tree, causing it to turn over and rest on its right, passenger side. DeCroteau said it is unknown what caused the woman to swerve.
