The manager told Melrose Police that he found a screen had been cut on the back basement window, Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said. Apparently someone entered the building through that broken window screen.

"He believes he may have disrupted this person, because he found the copper piping from a sump pump that was down there had been pulled off and was leaning against the wall," DeCroteau said. The incident remains under investigation.
