A rainy day

by Shirley Rabb

Aug. 26, 2022

The sky is darkening as the grey clouds move in to cover the blue sky.

The sound of thunder is in the air and a flash of lighting.

The trees are thrashing about to a powerful wind that makes the branches of the birch and pine trees dance to the music of a fast and furious song.

A single goldfinch is still at the feeder, and it moves about like on a child’s swing.

It is 3pm and the afternoon predictions for rain is scheduled into this evening.

The rumble continues as the sky gets darker and the wind moves up a notch.

There are two loons in the lake seeming to enjoy the rhythm of the waves.

The rain comes down in torrents and more loud thunder and bright lightening.

The trees seem to be racing with the wind as they accept the moisture from the heavens.

Veils of rain on the window create a fine mesh screen, and the lake is like an ocean reaching for the shore.

It is loud and lightning flashes for an instant of brightness, and then shuts off like a light switch.

For a short while at 3:45 the thunder has moved away and the pouring rain has become a shower.

The trees are still and the sky is no longer black but shades of grey.

Now, once again the thunder and lightning, but the trees are still as the rain continues to fall.

At 5:15 the rain has stopped; the lighting and thunder have left the area with a quiet feeling.

The sky is brighter now as blue skies and white clouds appear, and the birds come back to the feeders.

Mother Nature has spoken and we had no choice but to listen.
