Red Hatter for August 2026

The heat of August is upon us but on we go. These have really been "the dog days of summer" so we held of till the latter part of the month and.....

On August 21st we headed for the Saugus Senior Center to see one of our favorites ,Sheryl Faye.

This performance of her historical women was Abigail Adams,, Liberty and Legacy.

Sheryl brought to life the highlights of Abigail's life and her courage and influence during the Birth of our Nation.

Her conflicts as her husband John Adams was politically involved in the process of making this a great nation. Home life with children and her husband away for long periods of time. All done with the experience of a great performer.

Costume changes and technology brought the performance to new heights.

It was amazing to see and hear Sheryl reach across the screen , as Abigail ,while serving her friend tea . Putting the tea cup into the screen and being taken by her friend in the screen. WOW.

Scenes of the Boston Tea party and the signing of the declaration of independence all appearing on the screen and in her performance.

If the opportunity arises that Sheryl is local again...you must go to witness her performance.

On the 23rd. we had planned to go to and old Tymers baseball game but...the weather was threatening so we went to eat.

The Causeway restaurant in Gloucester was our choice and the steamers, and mussels and haddock were delicious; with take home boxes for most of it. You can't beat their Clam chowder.

On the 25th. two of us drove to Bidderford Maine to have lunch with our sister group of Red Hatters who lived in Maine.

The restaurant was The Golden Apple Buffet and it was great.

A very large Chinese Buffet with a variety of Oriental and American foods. Rows of food, soups, salads, and desserts; and even ice cream in the side coolers.

Lunch and cross states conversation made it a really nice day for all. One and a half hours after eating we were back in Melrose.

No buffet leftovers but a lovely time well driven.

ON the 25th we headed to Sudbury Ma for Sky Bars. You all remember Sky Bars....that wonderful chocolate candy bar filled with four sections, caramel, vanilla, peanuts and fudge. And only 180 calories of sheer smoothness.

The location for Sky Bar manufacturing is at the Duck Soup shop. This shop caries wines, kitchen utensils, a variety of wonderful "stuff" and other candies.

We were lucky that they still had some containers of broken pieces of the Sky Bar for a buck and of course boxes piled up for sale at the regular price.

We got to see the three members of the work staff making the bars behind the glass wall; and a description of how and when the Duck Soup owner got the only rights in the country to make this delicious bar. They make about 50,000 bars a week, and now sell them in some of the groceries like Market Basket and a few other around.

We all left with boxes of Sky Bars and other goodies before heading out to lunch at the Wayside Inn.

Only a ten minute ride and we were at the very lovely historical Inn. Beautiful surroundings both outside and inside.

It was early so we had out choice of table and we really had a great time. The food and service was exceptional, of course . The manager stopped by to chat with us and one of our members got talking about the Buffalo Bill football that they were both familiar with from past living experiences in New York. The rest of us spoke highly about the Patriots.

It was a lovely day, weather wise and other wise. A Red Hat outing that we always enjoy together.

So August comes to and end, but we will continue to move ahead whenever and wherever we can. Come join us.
