RED HATS AUGUST 2018

In the midst of a very hot month we started our plans when we had our meeting on the 8th of August.

That same evening six of our members went to enjoy a lobster dinner at the Baptists Church in Medford.

The menu was all you could eat chowder, salad, coleslaw, cold or hot drinks and dessert. We each got one lobster and most of us just took it home in a doggie bag. After filling ourselves with the all-you-could-eat stuff the lobster will be a great lunch the next day. It was
a good night.

On August 12 with a downpour that followed us north on route 95 we were heading for an unusual performance in South Berwick Maine.

We drove the distance to enjoy a Radio Mystery Theatre presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's movie 39 steps.

The unique play was done with actors holding scripts in front of old fashioned microphones. Each member of the cast read their lines with accents and voice changes that brought us to the heart of the mystery movie.

The show performed to an audience of about 35 people took place in the “cottage” on the grounds of the Historic Hamilton House.

The rain had stopped and we had some time to view the beautiful gardens surrounding the area.

Our dinner was about 40 minutes south at the Hungry Traveler restaurant in Salisbury Ma. Outstanding food and service added more to what otherwise could have been a gloomy day had we decided to concern ourselves with weather.

It’s the Red Hat Way..

August 20th and Derry New Hampshire was our trip today. One of our members has a lovely house on the lake where we planned to spend a glorious summer day.

This was a Pot Luck affair and all members brought a dish (or two) for the group to indulge in. The drinks were non-alcoholic except for a bit of Bailey’s Irish Crème.

The weather was magnificent, a cool breeze, beautiful sky and a view of the lake. We had chips, cherries and cold drinks for openers. When it was time to eat things worked out as usual, we had no duplicates. There were salads, chicken, meat balls (two kinds) potato salad, shrimp, and an impossible pie. Desserts was a wonderful small cookies stuffed with raspberry. What a feast! What an outstanding Red Hat Day!

August 30th, our last outing for this month, and it was off to Lincoln to tour the Gropius House. The Gropius House was built in 1938 by German architect Walter Gropius. The weather was still HOT but had dropped to 89 degrees, (better than the past few days that reached 105). Two air conditioned cars and we were on our way to have a bit of culture, a great lunch,(of course) and another Red Hat day.

The house, when built in 1938, was revolutionary in its impact. Every aspect of the house and its surrounding landscape was planned for maximum efficiency and simplicity in design. Mature trees were moved from the area woods and replanted closer to the house for cutting back on the heat of the sun outside the tall windows that surround the sunny side of the house. It was a tour that was more than any of us had expected; definitely worth the $12.00 admission

Our lunch was in Concord at the Colonial Inn where the food and the service was once again great.

So ends August...look for the Red Hatter's fun September coming up.
