RED HATTERS August 2019

By Shirley Rabb

Hello August..

It was on August 8th. that members and friends; (13 in all) went to see "La Cage Aux Folles" At the Reagle Music Theater in Waltham.

It was an outstanding performance of all the cast. James Darrah and J.T. Turner playing the lead parts were magnificent. There voices filled the hall! The surrounding cast of about 30 dancers and singers left us with songs to hum on the way out. "We are what we are", "With you on my arm","I am what I am" and of course "The best of Times".

It is a joyous play, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Our dinner was at the Chateau, also in Waltham, and lobster rolls were on special this evening. There was pasta, and salads and conversation about the play and the future plans for the month.

A wonderful, musical fun filled August Day.

August 11th was a beautiful day for the ball game so off we went. It was the Lowell Spinners playing the Hudson Valley Renegades. Our seats were in the shade, there was a beautiful blue sky and a soft gentle breeze, and we were going to have some fun.

The game started early; at 4:30, because it was to be a double header and we got comfortable in our reserved seats. Our tickets provided us with waitress service bringing us cold drinks, hot dogs and ice creams. What a deal for $18.00!

The standing for the National Anthem by players and the visiting team is always impressive; and the people in the stands were ready to hear the umpire shout PLAY BALL.

I will have to say the game was not to exciting, since the final score did not favor the Spinners. They lost 7 to 2 but there were fun things for the kids (little ones and us older folks).

They have activities between innings to fill in the time. Quick games of entertainment where kids in the stand can toss a ball around or the local school dance team will perform.

We were lucky to get baseballs signed by Bryan Lucas one of the Spinners pitchers, and we were told not to shout it out because no one else got them. Some fun huh!

It is always a good summer thing to do when you can get out to a ball game, shout out loud, and enjoy each others company; win or lose.

On August 20th we headed out to Derry NH. where one of our members has a wonderful house on the lake.

The temperature was in the mid 80's but the water was cool and the comfort of the screened in porch kept any flying things away. Flowers are bright along the fence and two of our hearty members went in for a swim.

This was a pot luck function and there was plenty of food for all. We never seem to duplicate each other even when we do not tell ahead of time what we are bringing.

From salad to chicken; to pizza and shrimp. There was veggies and dip and apple crisp. There was water and root beer and just a delightful day to enjoy each others company. A few of us decided we would end this day with an ice cream so off we went to Moo's, one of the best ice cream places in Derry NH.

End of summer? Perhaps, but we plan on enjoying the upcoming seasons one at a time because....We are Red Hatters.

On August 24th we mourned the life of one of our members. It was a sad parting but a celebration of her life as a wonderful person, and a faithful and loving member of our group of Red Hatters. Roberta will be missed but we are glad to have had her in our lives.

August 27th. it was off to Newbury and Colby Farms to see the field of sunflowers in bloom. It was a magnificent day! The temperature was 75 degrees, the sun was shining, and the sky was shades of blue with wispy white clouds.

Planted 13 years ago by the Colby family there are two acres that fill a field with thousands of beautiful, bright sunflowers. It is an awesome sight to see as we walked from the parking lot towards the field. There were adults with children and dogs, and they weaved there way around the acres and slid in between the flowers to take pictures. People took pictures of people and it was a wonderful day to be here.

The time for seeing the flowers is a short season, and we were lucky this year. An outstanding sight to see. If you can make the trip next year; don't miss the marvel of nature.

We had our lunch at The Rusty Can in Newbury, not far from the farm. We sat up on stools in the bar area. The room was alive with smiling customers, and about 4 TVs.

The food was perfect! Brisket that melted in your mouth, ribs, fried bologna sandwiches. WOW! The waitress was very good, the prices more than reasonable and the take home boxes went with a few of us. Oh, did I tell you the Pecan pie with ice cream was luscious; whipped cream too. A piece is in my freezer; although a few members tried some there was plenty left over for another time for me to enjoy.

This is a restaurant we will go back to; for sure!

This ends the month of August for this Red Hat group. We have enjoyed nature, the ball game, the theater, and a pot luck to end all pot luck dinners. How could you possibly be anything but happy by being a Red Hatter.
