Red Hatters Jume 2019

by Shirley Rabb

On Sunday June 2nd a group of us went to the United Methodist Church in North Chelmsford to hear a performance by the Merrimack Valley Ringers.

It is amazing that sixteen bell ringers could create the sounds and symphony of outstanding music. There were eleven different tunes that came out loud and clear and sometimes soft and sweet. The ringers change bells at each selection, and to have mastered that in itself is a great performance. It was a very enjoyable hour and a half.

.Our dinner for this day was at The Good Thymes restaurant in Lowell about 20 minutes away. The GPS took us around, and around again but we did get there and enjoyed the outstanding food selections. It was an excellent way to spend the day with Red Hat friends.

On June 7th. we headed out to Woburn to enjoy the Greek Festival at the Annunciation Church.

It was a beautiful day! We parked across the street and headed for the covered tent and indoor displays of the taste and Art of Greece. There were a few venders with lovely pieces of jewelry, craft wear and clothing; but the dining area was our goal for now.

We sat a t a round table and most of us had Pastitsio which was new to most of us; and it was delicious. There was pastry, of course but we passed this time and a few of us headed to Wakefield for our ice cream cones. Just a lovely day to be out with Red Hat friends and great Greek food and fellowship.

On June 8th. we were off to meet the Revolutionary War soldiers as we watched a reenactment of the Battle of Newbury. This outing was indeed outdoors so we drove to the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm in Newbury.

We brought our chairs and enjoyed being outdoors to watch and listen as we saw members of the Continental line and His Majesty's First Regiment of Foot Guards re-enact a retreat from Boston with cannon, cavalry, and drills. We were able to tour the 1690 manor house, the home of two Newburyport's Revolutionary War heroes.

Before the battle we walked around the tent areas and watched as the men and women of both the British and the Revolutionary armies were preparing to go to the field for the conflict.

Members of the Continental Line and His Majesty's First Regiment of Foot Guards proceeded to re-enact a retreat from Boston with cannons, cavalry and drills.

It was another lovely day to be outdoors as we spent our second day of this week-end with friends,(and foes) to enjoy and celebrate our selves.

We never seem to forget dinner so we drove to the Bradford Pub to spend some more time laughing, talking and eating some delicious meals of Quiche, Chowder, Pork Chops and salad; and oh yes a very outlandish dessert that we all ate together. What fun we have!

To end this busy week-end on June 9th. we drove to Danvers to have lunch at The Sea Witch restaurant. What a great place for parking and for being able to enjoy the best seafood around. Soooo Good!.

After getting our fill of food it was back to Melrose to hear the Beethoven Society present a musical performances by " The Uptown Girls". The music took us back to the time when Swing was King and Big Bands were the thing.

The music of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Duke Ellington, along with songs of the Andrew Sisters . The show was the nostalgia of music or "our time", and we loved it.

After enjoying the sunshine, our togetherness and all the fun we have had this past week-end it was time for us to slow down for a few days until our next meeting on June 12th. WOW that's only a few days away.

June 30th. it was time to see a Vintage Baseball game this year. We have gone to these games for the last few years and they are always fun to watch....but Mother Nature rained us out! There was a 50% chance of rain and as Red Hatters we do not do 50% of anything; 100 % is always our goal so we changed our direction and headed for the movie theater in Danvers to see" Yesterday" (That is the name of the movie).

All the seats were taken so once more we made a choice to have coffee at Panara's at the mall and wait to see Rocketman ! This is the musical story of Elton John, his breakthrough years and his transformation from a shy piano prodigy to an international super star. The story was very interesting and the songs and music kept our minds moving to the beats.

Our lunch was at Teresa's Italian restaurant in Middleton and all our meals were great. The waitress was very accommodating by giving us separate checks, (which we always ask for; and get most places). I had baked haddock in lemon sauce with Tuscan vegetables; the rest of the group had Italian food with plenty of left overs. So you can see, although we missed the ball game and had a movie change we had a 100% Red Hat day .
