Red Hatters May 2022

It was May 1st and we spent a wonderful afternoon watching the Phantom of the Opera. The members of the Melrose High School did an outstanding job dancing and singing through the performance.

The voices of the teenager were outstanding, professional quality; hitting every note that kept us listening and applauding.

The backstage crew moved the sets around; the costume changes were terrific, and it just was a marvelous portrayal of this long standing Broadway show.

And the dropping of the chandelier, (that came all the way from Los Vegas), was magic. Surprises all along the way; Bravo to all the members!

Five of us moved to Liberty Bell for dinner…burgers and seafood salads, and a great start to May.

On May 5th we started out at the Milano Center here in Melrose to see the Delvena Theater Company present “ Thirteen Things About Ed Carpolotti”.

13 Things About Ed Carpolotti finds Virginia alone in her home for the first time after her husband, Ed passes away. Worse, she discovers that Ed's business has been failing for years. As president of the company now, Virginia finds herself on the hook for almost $2 million, including money borrowed from a loan shark. The vultures surround her, demanding funds immediately, when, most troublingly, a blackmail note arrives from an anonymous villain, demanding an additional $1 million, or else 13 awful things about her husband and his associates will be revealed to the world. Musical and funny, as the actors play there parts with serious humor. Always enjoyable to watch this group.

But May 5th. Was Cinco de Mayo and we could not pass up Mexican fiesta time. Our first stop was the Senior Center in Melrose to see Lynne Moulton of the Delvena Theater Company perform the part of Virginia Carpolotti from the production “ 13 Things about Ed Carpolotti” . She was a one woman show for an hour, with dialog and songs. It was a light and funny show that we all enjoyed. Then we were off to Mexico Lindo to enjoy the festivities. We ate our nachos and drinks and were very pleased with our selections of food, colorful and tasty. The service and the wonderful atmosphere on this special day made it another happy Red Hat Day.

May 8th it was off to Concord to see the play Titanic! The play gave the feelings of those aboard the ship; from 1st class to steerage. The happy departure of the maiden voyage brought excitement and joy to all lucky to get aboard. The activities aboard the ship for all levels of travel and then the iceberg that caused the collision and the destiny of the "unsinkable" ship. The last scenes as the ship was going down and the people(mostly women and children) getting on the boats was left us feeling for them to hasten to safety. There were 2,200 on board and over 100,00 never made it off.

The production was an outstanding and very realistic play. Bravo to all the performers.

We went to Bertuccis in Woburn for dinner. Because of this being Mother's Day we had a wait for our dinners. We spent our waiting time eating rolls and talking of the play. After we got our food there were take home boxes; and we agreed we DID IT AGAIN; another great Red Hat Day.

On May 20 we headed back to The Jail in Concord for lunch. It has been too long to be away from this lunch venue; but there are rule to get into jail for lunch. With the changing times there were these things to be allowed in.

A covid test was performed, with a 15 minute wait for results, (we were all just fine) Identification cards needed, Covid card indicating all our shots and boosters, and $3.21 for the meal.

The meals are from soup,today clam chowder, and salad, to desserts served by the current inmates that are in the Culinary program for rehabilitation.

Today's choices were baked chicken with corn and green beans or fish taco's with rice. The desserts were pineapple coconut cookies or chocolate cake.

Did I mention that the meal cost $3.21 ?

It was a beautiful day to be out on the road and to enjoy each others company in this strange but very pleasurable lunch spot.
