Red HattersJanuary 2020

By Shirley Rabb

January 1st. a good day for a movie with friends; and we did just that.

Having to purchase our tickets in advance we were able to select our seats and arrive close to the noon starting time. The movie we chose to start this year was "Little Women".

Most of us know the story that took place close to home in Concord Ma. The story of four sisters as they ,and their family went through hard time and good times. The movie followed the lines of the famous book, the scenes and costumes were of the times and the acting was very good. Just a bit of nostalgia to start the year.

After the movie we drove about 5 minutes to the Sylvan St. Grill to enjoy a wonderful lunch. The conversations were of the movie and our plans for the New Year.

This is our "weather permitting" time for outings but we plan on going where ever we can ,when ever we can.

On January 25th we headed out to the Manderin restaurant in Reading to celebrate the Chinese New Year. (the year of the rat). We were eleven Red Hatters that were out for a wonderful, colorful, fun filled day; plus the great food. And we got all of that.

We were presented with red envelopes that held one dollar . In Chinese Culture, red envelopes containing money are given out as a symbol of good luck and prosperity with blessings for the New Year. We accepted our gifts and started to enjoy the day.

We were seated at a round table so we were able to talk to each other without any obstructions. There was soup, hot tea and water moving around the carousel in the center of the table. Most of the group chose the buffet which gave us the option of many different types of Chinese foods and sauces.

At around noon the show began outside the front door! The members of a local Karate team were donning the costumes of the dragons, and the traditional ceremony of carving up the pig was preformed by the chef and the members of the restaurant. The drums were pounding out a beat for the dragons to toss and turn and swirl around before going inside to entertain all of the patrons.

It was a fun filled time with the colorful dragons shaking and moving through the restaurant excepting red envelopes from the children and adults.

After the show it was time for dessert of fruit, pastry and ice cream.

What a great day it was!
