Sandy Seaside Scenes
Revere Beach sand sculpting contest by Debbi Collar photo credit - Debbi Collar

Grains of sand are sculpted each year into seaside scenes that delight beach goers and non-beach goers, the younger and older pedestrians, as they walk along America's First Public Beach in Revere. This year's theme - literacy.

How many book titles and/or characters can you find in this scene?
Just a few titles noticed by this writer in this sculpture in which all artists combined their talents to work on this project, were "Make Way for Ducklings," "Jack In the Beanstalk," " The Cat In The Hat," " The Hungry Caterpillar," and could that be Cinderella's Castle or any other castle from storybooks for children?

Sculptors later competed for various prizes hoping that the judges would choose their work as first place of this year's festival. The "People's Choice Award" is also an important ribbon to have attached to the winner's artwork following the votes. This was the 15th year Revere has cordoned off part of the beach for its annual International Sand Sculpting Festival.
Would you have considered any of the following sculptures as winner's for this year's competition? In fairness to our readers and to all of the participating sculptors, these are just a few of the 25 that were on the beach.

"Making Beautiful Music." Sculptor, Saugus Resident, Deborah Barrett/ Cutulle.

Free lessons in sculpting were also offered. Remember the days sculpting from styrofoam cups or plastic buckets? Is sculpting in your child's future or your own future?
Which sandcastle did you choose as a winner from those above? Once again, to to be fair to the competitors, it was impossible use all 25 photos. Yet for all of these artists, everyone of them deserves to be considered a winner. Judging by the amount of people who visited the sculptures throughout the week watching the process from beginning to end and taking many photographs each one of these sculptors is a winner.
