School Closures, Parking Ban As Blizzard Hits Melrose

Parts of Middlesex County have seen more than 15 inches of snow.

MELROSE, MA — A major blizzard is hitting Massachusetts, and many communities in are dealing with well over one foot of snow.

Parts of Middlesex County have seen more than 15 inches of snow, as of 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. A state of emergency remains in effect across the state, and Melrose took precautions ahead of the storm, including closing schools and non-essential town offices.

Melrose closed all municipal buildings and public schools for Monday, Feb. 23. In addition, the city is asking residents to stay off the roads and avoid on-street parking as part of a Parking Ban that went into effect on Sunday at 8 p.m. and will remain in effect until further notice. All vehicles parked on-street could be ticketed or towed while the ban is taking place.

"Melrose treats and plows all public roadways in addition to sidewalks abutting City properties. Residents and business operators are reminded that everyone is responsible for clearing and maintaining the sidewalk in front of their property," city leadership said in a statement. "If you have the time and the ability, please consider helping a neighbor keep their sidewalks clear."

Trash and recycling collection was also cancelled for Monday and will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week for all residents. Emergency alerts and parking restrictions are announced on the city website as well as its Everbridge alerts system.
