Search Finds Nothing After Threat at High School

Police searched the school on Tuesday morning.

A threat at Tuesday morning resulted in a search that found nothing while students and teachers remained in classrooms, according to Superintendent Joe Casey and Lt. Mark DeCroteau.

A note that read "bomb 10-4-11" was found taped to a first floor hallway wall, DeCroteau said. NEMLEC's School Threat Assessment and Response System (STARS) was contacted, the school was locked down, and a search was conducted. NEMLEC was called off after the was search complete.

On Wednesday afternoon, Casey provided Melrose Patch with the message sent home to Melrose High School and families on Tuesday.

According to the message, the search lasted approximately 45 minutes.

Below is the text of the message from the superintendent:

This is Superintendent of Schools, Joseph Casey calling to inform you that at approximately 9:47AM today a threat against Melrose High School occurred. School officials notified public safety as well as STARS/NEMLEC personnel as a precaution. Students and faculty entered a shelter in place protocol to allow school and public safety officials to search the building. The event lasted approximately 45 minutes. Appropriate steps were taken to ensure that students and staff at the high school as well as the middle school remained safe during this time. Students and staff have returned to a normal schedule. We wish to thank all students, staff and parents for their cooperation in allowing the school and public safety officials to do their job and keep our students safe.
