Burnt Food Leads to Temporary Evacuation of Two Steele House Floors

The Melrose Fire Department evacuated the fifth and sixth floors while searching for the cause of heavy smoke.

Burnt food led to the temporary evacuation of Steele House residents on the fifth and sixth floors on Wednesday afternoon.

Melrose firefighters responded to the senior apartment complex after a report of heavy smoke on the fifth floor. While searching for the source of the smoke, the Melrose Fire Department evacuated residents from the fifth and sixth floors at approximately 2:15 p.m.

About 10 minutes later, firefighters pinpointed burnt food as the culprit and began letting residents back into the building. The Fire Department sounded the all-out on the box alarm at 2:33 p.m.
