Thoughts while shaving

by Jim Tierney

Germs, germs, germs…they are everywhere and so hard to avoid. A very good example is the everyday exchange of money. Some bills are so old they could have gone through thousands of hands in their travels. While germ conscious people are careful of cleanliness and what they eat, they probably don’t give much thought to the old money..or shaking hands..or door knobs..or faucets..or elevator buttons..or supermarket carriages, to name very few places where there’s ALWAYS germs. Maybe the real diehards, find a way to deal with these obstacles. I remember being on a group tour, stopping at a rest area and following 2 men going to the restroom. They graciously stepped aside to let me go in first and when we finished, they WAITED for me to leave and followed me out. I found out later that I handled the door knobs for them. I’m a firm believer of the peck of dirt theory. We ALL will eat a peck of dirt in our lifetime (do you know what a peck is?) no matter how careful we are but it’s probably a good thing, keeping our immune system built up and preventing us from catching all the viruses out there just waiting for us.
