Football

The Melrose High football team edged out a tough 10-7 win over Lexington on Oct. 6, in  a Middlesex League crossover game, and pull into the halfway point of the season with perfect 5-0 mark and a five-game winning streak.

Matt DeSimone snapped a 7-7 deadlock in the fourth quarter with a field goal, giving the Red Raiders the win, after trading first quarter scores with the Minutemen. CJ Hanson hauled in a 55-yard touchdown reception from Bryan Reale in the first quarter to account for the lone Melrose touchdown of the game.

Volleyball

The Lady Raiders (12-0) began the week with by far the toughest test of the season to date in perennial Division I power Central Catholic on Oct. 3 and emerged on the winning end of a 3-1 decision. Melrose dropped the opening set 25-20 playing in enemy territory, but battled back to claim a 25-19 win in set two. With Central leading 24-16 in the third set, the Lady Raiders mounted a rousing comeback and scored nine straight points to steal the set from CC. The final set had nail-biter written all over it, and did not disappoint, as the two teams slugged it out from box to wire, with Melrose emerging on top, 26-24. Sarah McGowan had 20 kills, while Rachel Johnson, Jill Slabacheski, Alyssa DiRaffaele and Amanda Commito all played well for Melrose.

Next it was back to league play for Melrose, as they took on Winchester on Oct. 4, and took home a 3-1 win, with set scores of 25-23, 25-6, 26-24 and 25-5. Sarah McGowan posted 15 kills, while Jen Cain collected nine.
