Football
The Red Raiders spoiled Watertown’s bid for a perfect regular season, handing their Middlesex League Small rivals a 35-7 whitewashing at Woburn’s Connolly Memorial Stadium on Oct. 21 before a sizable and vocal horde of supporters. The win comes just one week after the Red Raiders’ own undefeated run was snapped.

Matt DeSimone anchored the defense, collecting a pair of interceptions.
Melrose will play its eighth straight game across the town line on Oct. 28, when they travel to Wilmington for a date with the Wildcats.
It was also revealed last week, the first game on the new Fred Green Field will be Nov. 4 against Arlington, rather than on Thanksgiving Day against Wakefield, as originally planned. While, according to Mayor Rob Dolan, the entire athletic complex won’t be up and running by then, the field will be ready, and Dolan expressed his desire to see this year’s senior class get on the new turf.
Volleyball
The complete and total dominance of the Melrose girls volleyball team over any and all challengers continued last week, as the Lady Raiders picked up another pair of wins—in straight sets, of course.
Melrose downed Bishop Fenwick on Oct. 19, 25-15, 25-22 and 27-25, in a non-league contest that began with a ceremony honoring Melrose head coach Scott Celli, a recent MHS Hall of Fame inductee, who is closing in on 300 career victories. Sarah McGowan picked up 15 kills, while Rachel Johnson, quickly establishing herself as a pivotal player in the squad, bagged 12.
On Oct. 21, Melrose swept to another 3-0 win, in a contest that saw several milestones fall beneath the relentless march of the Lady Raiders’ juggernaut. Junior setter Brooke Bell bagged her 1000th career assist, while as a team, Melrose completed the match without a single service error, something no Lady Raiders unit has done over the past ten years.
Melrose is 16-0 overall, and 11-0 in league play, maintaining their No. 5 ranking in the Boston Globe’s Top 20 poll.
Soccer
Boys: The Melrose boys soccer team continued its march towards the ML Small crown last week, and while they failed to get a win, they were able to force a 0-0 stalemate with divisional rivals Wilmington on Oct. 20. The Red Raiders are now 7-2-3 overall, and 4-0-2 in the ML Small, good enough for the top of the table.
Girls: The Lady Raiders lost a pair of divisional games last week, falling to Wakefield, 3-0, on Oct. 18 and succumbing to the Lady Wildcats of Wilmington in a close 1-0 encounter on Oct. 20.
Field Hockey
Melrose dropped its lone game last week, a 3-0 decision against neighboring Wakefield in ML Small play on Oct. 18. The Lady Raiders are now 0-9-1.
