Weekly Sports Roundup: Oct. 24-29

A look at all the local sports action from Melrose last week.

Football

The Melrose High football team slipped another game further off the pace in the Middlesex League Small School Division with a . The Red Raiders took a slim 14-13 lead into the final frame, but a 4-yard touchdown run by the Wildcats’ Matt Ferreira sealed defeat for the visitors. Bryan Reale rushed for a pair of touchdowns, while Matt DeSimone was 2-of-2 on PATs.

Melrose (6-2 overall, 1-2 league) will look to rebound against ML crossover rival Arlington on Nov. 4 at home.

Volleyball

The week began with a shock for the Melrose High volleyball team: A loss. Their first of the year, a 3-2 defeat against Westborough on Oct. 24, snapped a 16-game winning streak and left the Lady Raiders needing to cope with their first setback of the year. Prior to the loss, Melrose had dropped a grand total of four sets all year, recording an impressive 12 shutout wins. The Lady Raiders would run that number to 14, as they rebounded from the loss to Westborough well, recording back to back 3-0 shutouts over Stoneham (Oct. 26) and Watertown (Oct. 28).

Soccer

Boys: Melrose High boys’ soccer took a narrow 1-0 decision from non-league rival Medford on Oct. 29 and snapped . The Red Raiders currently lead the ML Small at 7-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in league play.

Girls: The Lady Raiders drew with league rival Stoneham on Oct. 24, 1-1, and are sitting squarely at mid-table in the ML Small at 5-8-1 overall, and 4-5-1 in the league.

Field Hockey

On the field hockey pitch, things haven’t gone all that well for Melrose High. That wouldn’t change last week, as the Lady Raiders dropped two more games, against Stoneham, 5-0, on Oct. 25 and Watertown, by an identical scoreline, on Oct. 28. Melrose falls to 0-11-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the league.

Cross Country

Boys: The Red Raiders (2-5 overall, 2-3 league) ended the fall campaign on Oct. 25, against Watertown, and fell 25-30 against their league rivals. Sophomore Christian Gentile led the way for Melrose, in the losing effort on Watertown’s 2.7-mile course, bagging first place with a time of 16:06. Senior Chris Gonzalez finished fifth at 17:08, while junior Andrew Driscoll took sixth place with a time of 17:13. Freshman Duncan Locke finished eighth at 17:38 and  senior Alex Wilson rounded out the top ten at 17:55.

Girls: The Melrose High girls cross country team wrapped up the year at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the ML Small, and earned a 18-40 victory over Watertown in the season finale on Oct. 25. The Lady Raiders locked down six of the top ten spots, with senior Kelli Halligan placing first with a time of 19:39. Sophomore Katarina Frazier took second at 19:57, while junior Sarah McDonald finished fourth with a 20:41 mark. Sophomore Laura Tramontozzi was fifth at 20:43, while senior Hannah Singleman finished sixth at 21:05. Senior Katie Cosman (21:30) finished in ninth place.
