Girls
The Lady Raiders (5-2) played twice last week, and split a pair of Middlesex League games. Melrose picked up a big 3-2 road win against Wakefield on Sept. 20, but then they took a 2-1 defeat at the hands of league newcomers Wilmington on Sept. 23.
Volleyball
The Lady Raiders (7-0, 5-0 ML Small) traveled to Wilmington to start the week, and were able to roll to a 3-0 victory. Melrose won by game scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-13. Sarah McGowan paced Melrose with 13 kills, while Rachel Johnson collected seven kills. Kayla Wyland and Brooke Bell also contributed strong outings.
Melrose faced Stoneham on Sept. 23, in a battle of the ML Small’s top two teams, and, once again, the Lady Raiders put forth a strong case for being a cut above the rest of the league with a 3-0 win. Melrose prevailed thanks to strong play from Amanda Commito, Johnson and Bell. McGowan posted nine kills, while Wyland and Jen Cain also returned strong performances.
Field Hockey
The Lady Raiders began the week with a 2-0 defeat against Burlington on Sept. 19, as a pair of first-half tallies for the Red Devils effectively put the game away for Burlington. Melrose took on Wakefield next, on Sept. 21, and were shutout, 3-0, by their ML Small rivals, as Erin Riley, Patty Malone and Maria Gordon all scored for the Lady Warriors.
Cross-Country
Boys
The Melrose boys cross-country squad took part in one contest last week, and dropped an 18-45 decision on the road against ML newcomers Arlington. The Red Raiders run again on Sept. 27 against Burlington.
Girls
CORRECTED (see comments below): The Melrose High girls cross-country team defeated Arlington 15-50 on Sept. 20. The Lady Raiders return to action on Sept. 27 against Burlington.
Golf
The Red Raiders golf team played three this past week, but only managed to come away with a single victory. On Sept. 19, Melrose took on Arlington, and out shot the Spy Ponders 46-26. Things went south from there, however, as Wilmington welcomed the Red Raiders into town on Sept. 21 and promptly handed them a 44.5-27.5 loss in ML Small play. Finally, on Sept. 22, border rivals Wakefield pulled out a 37.5-34.5 win. Melrose is now 3-2 on the year, and returns to the links on Sept. 26 against Burlington.
