MILFORD, MA — Milford will stop accepting mattresses and box springs at the curb in March, but at the same time will begin allowing town residents to recycle the items.

Starting March 1, Milford-based Green Mattress will accept mattresses at the Cedar Street transfer station for a $20 fee per item.

"The Board of Health voted unanimously to implement this change for two reasons," the Milford Board of Health said in a statement. "First, mattresses are made up almost entirely of recyclable materials. Once disassembled, up to 85 percent of mattress components can be recycled. Second, discarded mattresses and box springs can be notoriously expensive to dispose of and difficult to manage."

Residents will need to get a transfer station sticker starting in July to drop off mattresses. Contact the Board of Health at 508-634-2315 or the Milford Transfer Station at 508-478-8093 for more details.

You can also find other local mattress recycling programs in the state Department of Environmental Protection website.
