MILFORD, MA — A Milford woman hopes the person who stole her handicap placard has a change of heart and just returns it to the police station. Kayla Dulak has Multiple Sclerosis and depends on the placard to run errands — now more than ever since she's six months pregnant.

Dulak said her handicap placard that hangs in her car was stolen on Saturday night. She posted a note to the thief on a Milford community Facebook page saying, "You may as well have taken my legs out from under me, for when I discovered that my placard wasn’t in my car today, I had to turn around and leave the store before I ever got out of my car."

In the post, Dulak said the placard had been stolen out of her car and she speculated that it was the only item the thief was eyeing because her checkbook, prescription pills and cash were all still inside of the car. "In taking my placard, you robbed me of something far more significant than a piece of plastic; you took my independence," she wrote.

While Dulak has filed a police report for the stolen placard, which, if caught, will land the thief a 30 day license suspension and a fine of $500-1000, she still has to get a replacement. The process to replace a placard involves either mailing a new application to the RMV, which can take weeks, or traveling into the RMV Medical Affairs office in Boston to take care of it in person. Neither are convenient options, which is why Dulak posted that she hopes the person just hands over the placard to police.

Dulak added in her post that aside from realizing her placard was stolen, it was already one of her "bad days." Her Multiple Sclerosis had flared up due to the intense heat and her legs were numb. The added stress of her pregnancy didn't help the situation either.

"I truly hope for your sake that you never have to deal with the realities of being handicapped," the post read, "I hope that close parking space was worth it for you— it meant a lot to me, the person who needed it."
