MILFORD, MA — The Milford Police Department announced the appointment of a new officer to its division, intended to support schools in town.

Officer Brian Hayes has been named to the School Resource Division. The primary function of the group within the Family Services Unit is to serve as a conduit among the police department, school faculty, and the student body.

Officers Anthony Bavosi and Cody Carneiro have served as the division's two members, but Officer Carneiro recently moved to the Family Services Unit as a Detective, Milford police told Patch.

"As a lifelong Milford resident and someone who attended Milford schools, it's my goal to make a positive impact on our community and be a role model of law enforcement positivity for our younger student body,” Officer Hayes told Patch.

Officer Hayes has served on Milford's Patrol Division since 2018. Before that, he served as a full-time police officer at the Hopedale Police Department for four years. He also worked as a communications officer in Milford, serving in that role from 2011 to 2015.

Milford police said that Hayes will spend most of his time at Stacy Middle School and floating throughout the town's elementary schools, including Woodland, Brookside and Memorial Elementary Schools. Shining Star Early Childhood Center is also part of the Milford Public Schools system.

The objective of a School Resources Officer is proactivity, planning and presence, police said.

This news comes after the Milford Police Department announced an increased presence at district schools following a swatting incident at Milford High School last month that led to a shelter-in-place at the school.

On Dec. 6, Milford School Resource Officers placed the facility on lockdown following reports that a student was in possession of a gun. The reports were later determined to be false and part of a series of swatting incidents.
