Norman Rockwell left a
questionable legacy. His works made him one of the most popular artists that America
has produced. However, many critics argue that his work is "banal"
and doesn't live up to the Old Masters, while others claim he could have been
one of the greatest artists of all time if he had painted "serious
subjects."
Rockwell was a master painter and
illustrator. His works appeal comes from his reflections on everyday American
life. Rockwell is most famous for his covers of the Saturday Evening Post, America's
most popular magazine in the early and middle decades of the twentieth century.
He was also the premier illustrator for Boy's
Life, the Boy Scout of America's major publication. His Four Freedoms posters are still selling
briskly today.
Leaving the Post after four decades in 1963, Rockwell went to work for Look magazine. He then started to paint
more contemporary and controversial scenes, many to do with the burgeoning
Civil Rights Movement. He also was in great demand to do portraits of famous
politicians and entertainers.
Professor Michael Carter, of the College of Arts and Sciences at the Wentworth
Institute of Technology, will present the arguments in a lecture and slide
show.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Town Library, this event is free
and open to the public.
