Mosquito Spraying To Be Done In Milford Due To Moderate EEE Risk

Targeted sections of Milford will be sprayed for mosquitoes Friday evening, according to the Milford Board of Health.

MILFORD, MA — There will be targeted spraying for mosquitoes in Milford due to a moderate risk for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Milford.

EEE is a serious but rare illness caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. It is the most severe mosquito-transmitted disease in the U.S., with about 40 percent mortality and significant brain damage in half of survivors.

In response to mosquitoes testing positive for EEE in a neighboring town Central Mass Mosquito Control Project, in coordination with the Milford BOH, will be spraying targeted sections of town to reduce the Mosquito population and the risk of EEE. Spraying will take place after 8pm on Friday evening August 23, 2024.

It’s important for individuals to continue to take personal precautions against mosquito bites, both before and after spraying occurs.

Precautions to observe during a spray application:

Generally, there is no need to relocate during mosquito control spraying. The pesticides have been evaluated for this use and found to pose minimal risks to human health and the environment when used according to label directions. Although mosquito control pesticides pose low risks, some people may prefer to avoid or further minimize exposure. Some common sense steps to help reduce possible exposure to pesticides include:

  • Please remain inside for 15-20 minutes to allow the pesticide to drift through the area
  • Close street-facing windows and turn off the "outside air" setting (if any) on window air conditioners when spraying is taking place in the immediate area. (Central air units do not take in outside air, it’s OK to leave them on. You may open windows 15-20 minutes after the application, or longer at your discretion)
  • Do not let children play near or behind truck-mounted applicators when they are in use. Pets should be brought inside if possible or their cages covered to allow a more thorough application to be performed – any accidental exposure to pets should not cause a problem, we are using a pesticide similar to ones used for flea and tick control, but we use lower concentrations than most pet products.
