Reflecting on a Season

The Milford girls softball team fell to Amherst Thursday, ending a chance at the state championship, but the 22-2-0- season is something the head coach looks on with pride.

In a 3-0 loss to Amherst High School Thursday, the Milford Girls Softball team saw its chance at a state title dashed. But head Coach Brian Macchi knows his players will remember more than just the disappointment of their final game.

The Scarlet Hawks finished the 2011 season with a 22-2-0 record. They captured the Central Massachusetts Division I Title. The season highlights are captured on the team website.

The girls learned this year "what it is to be a part of a team," he said. The team's slogan before each game: "1-2-3 together. I think they really learned what that means."

While the team had high hopes of making it to the state championship in Worcester, "at the same time, it was a very productive season, a very enjoyable season," Macchi said Friday.

After the loss Thursday, played at University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Macchi said he told his players to remember "being a part of a team is something special."

The 2011 team was a young one, with only three seniors: Nicole Hanley, who played second base; Caroline Atkinson, who played first base; and Katie Blackburn, on third base, the coach said.

The majority of the players were juniors and sophomores, and will return for another season next year, Macchi said, including the starting pitcher and catcher.
