Selectmen Honor Milford's William Welch, Retired Senate Clerk

"Tonight it's a great honor to pay privilege to a Milfordian that now has retired from the Senate as the clerk."

MILFORD, MA- The Board of Selectmen opened Monday night's meeting by paying special homage to a Milford resident who spent decades serving the Senate as its clerk.

William Welch was honored by the board for his work and recent retirement from his job as Senate clerk. Welch began his career in the Senate clerk's office in 1973 and was elected clerk himself in 2003. 69-year-old Welch served in office during the tenures of nine Senate presidents.

Going over Welch's accomplishments and history, Chairman Michael Walsh expressed awe in the time Welch spent with the Senate as well as the experiences he had. "I can't believe the number of governors that you've worked with, it's just unreal," he said. "You had the opportunity to meet John Glenn, Coretta Scott King- I mean just an amazing story."

Chairman Walsh wished Welch a healthy and long retirement after his almost five decades of service to the Senate.

Senator Ryan Fattman and Representative Brian Murray accompanied Welch to the meeting, reading a resolution from the state general court commending Welch on his retirement and success while serving. The resolution was riddled with hockey references to pay homage to Welch's love of the sport as well as mentions of personal milestones such as his marriage and the birth of his children.

The Board of Selectmen offered Welch their own citation offering well wishes in his retirement on behalf of the town of Milford.

Recounting his first days elected Welch said he told his colleagues,"You might not like what I do, You might not like my rulings but I'm going to do it for the benefit of the Senate," Welch said. "My main goal was to keep the integrity of the office at the level it was when I got there and I think I did it."
