Fontbonne Beats Bishop Stang 7-6 in MIAA Softball Tournament

The MIAA Softball South Division 2 playoffs

Cunningham Park, Milton, Mass, June 2, 2011 – The MIAA Softball South Division 2 playoffs got underway with Fontbonne Academy ( 10-8 #16 seed) versus Bishop Stang High School (8-8 # 17 seed).

 Both teams were equally strong in all aspects as the teams traded runs keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.

 Pitchers for both sides, Bridget Plouffe for Fontbonne and Hannah Carvalho for Bishop Stang, kept the game close.

 Fontbonne would take the lead in the fifth inning 4-2, but the next inning Bishop Stang came right back scoring two runs and tying the game 4-4.

 In the top of the 7th Fontbonne would make a pitching change replacing Plouffe with Katie Sorgmen and Bishop Stang quickly scored two runs off the new pitcher making it 6-4.

 In the bottom of the 7th and Fontbonne on the verge of elimination, Lauren Kinsella caught the ball flush off of a Carvalho pitch that sent it deep into center field scoring two runs and tying the game. Becca Oliveri would fly out bringing up Caroline Staples. Staples wasted little time and hit the ball just out of the reach of the outfield and bringing in the winning run. Final score Fontbonne -7 – Bishop Stang - 6.

 “The game was back and forth – the teams really mirror each other. We really didn’t know much about them. It was really a close game,” said Head Coach Kathy Berardi. “Now we will be playing the number one seed – Abington (19-1), but I am not sure when.”
