Milton High and Milton Academy Square off in 350th Anniversary Classics

As part of Milton's 350th Anniversary Celebration the baseball and softball teams from Milton Academy and Milton High School played at Curry College on Saturday.

It certainty would be a day to remember as  played  in baseball and softball as part of this year's 350th Anniversary Celebration. Milton’s  hosted both games with the help of Curry College President Ken Quigley and Athletic Director Vinnie Eruzione who worked with Milton’s 350th Anniversary Committee to make this an enjoyable event. The weather was a perfect spring day and the crowds were treated to a great day of sports that will be remembered for years to come.

The sporting event between the two schools started in 1912, but only included a baseball game. This year another tradition would start as the 350th Celebration Committee added a softball game between the two schools.

The first game of the day was between the ladies, as the Milton High School Wildcats played the Milton Academy Mustangs at Curry College’s softball field.

Prior to the start of the game Brian Doherty, Milton’s Historical Committee President, addressed both teams stating, “You are the first softball team in this historic event and a tradition that will be added to Milton’s celebration. At the conclusion of the game the winner will be presented the 350th Classic Softball Trophy. So, enjoy the game and Milton thanks you for your participation today.”

Kelly Losi is the coach of the Wildcats and Amy Hickey coaches the Mustangs.

The Wildcats would take the lead 5-1 into the final inning. With two outs showing on the board the Mustangs exploded with three runs before Milton’s Sydney Fitzgerald threw out Milton Academy at first base, giving the Wildcats the win 5-4.

Both teams congratulated each other and Milton High cheered as they were presented the first Milton 350th Anniversary Classic Trophy.

The second event of the day was between the baseball teams of the Milton High School Wildcats and the Milton Academy Mustangs.

The last time these two teams met was in 1962 and the meeting before that was in 1912. The 1912 game would go to Milton Academy 7-5 and the trophy is still in the Milton Academy Trophy Case. The teams would meet again in 1962 and Milton High took the trophy home for that game 6-4. The trophy for that game has been misplaced and a diligent search is being made for its return.

Brian Doherty addressed both teams thanking them for their participation in this historic event. On display was the 350th Classic Trophy that would go to the winner. Also present was one of the members, Paul Dorsey, of the 1962 team who would throw out the first pitch.

The Milton High team is coached by Ted Curley and Milton Academy is coached by Matt Petherick. The game was enjoyable to watch with plenty of hitting and a total of 21 runs scored. Milton Academy (6-0) won the game scoring 15 and Milton High (1-3) scored 6.

Thoughout the game Curry College provided plenty of refreshments and the weather stayed perfect.

At the conclusion of the game Brian Doherty presented the trophy to the Milton Academy Mustangs for their 15-6 win over the Wildcats and told both teams “See you at the 400th  for the next game.”
