Milton Crew Participates in First Regatta

The Milton High School Crew team participated in it's first event on May 22, the Moose on the Malden Regatta.

A bit of history was made on Sunday, May 22, when Milton High had two boats entered in the “Moose on the Malden” Regatta. It was the first time Milton rowed in competition.

Other schools included Somerville High, Cambridge Rindge and Latin, Holyoke, Westford and the host, Malden High School.Yarmoughth and Waynflete trailored down from Maine for the event.

Milton had a novice-8 girls' boat and a boys' novice-4 in competition and though they didn't medal, the coaches were thrilled with the team's performance. “These kids have been training on the water for only three weeks. They are going up against seasoned teams. Frankly, for a first outing, they rowed great,” said head coach Tim Huth.

Mike Riciutti, parent and board member of the Friends of Milton Crew, also gave a tip of the hat to the parents of the athletes, remarking, “Look at this! Isn't this fantastic?” as he looked over the food tent that the parents had put together, complete with team banner. “This show of support for the team has been  just great.”

The team wrapped up its season last week with another regatta. They raced in the Massachusetts Public School 11th Spring Championship on the Merrimac River in Lowell on Sunday, May 29.  More information on the Championship is available at www.mpsra.org/champ.asp.
